- Herman E. Mattingly was ordained by Bishop James J. Hartley 09 May 1929 at St. Joseph cathedral, Columbus, Ohio. He was named a monsignor by Pope Pius XII 24 Jun 1946. Raised to higher rank 20 May 1949 and named a protonotary apostolic in November 1983. He studied at St.Vincent College, Latrobe, PA where he earned bachelor's degrees in arts and philosophy, as well as an A.M. degree. He received a master's degree in the sciences from Ohio State Univer- sity. He was a teacher at St. Charles Seminary in Columbus until 1948.
